Hosted by award winning jewellers Milena Kovanovic (Crucible London) & Ros Millar and The Ringsmiths team.  In this direct casting method, molten metal directly fills a design carved/imprinted into the surface of a cuttlebone. Producing a finished three-dimensional cast object - in this case a signet ring. This technique is one of the earliest known casting processes used by man for thousands of years.

Over the course of this 4 hour workshop we will teach you everything you need to know about how to prepare and cast your very own silver signet ring. You will have plenty of opportunity to practice and test out this variable technique which is safe, fast and versatile.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and more advanced students. 

Each student will be provided with an apron, though we ask you to please wear suitable non- loose clothing (as you would for any other semi-messy art form). For health and safety we also recommend close toed shoes.

With a maximum of six people in any one class, there will be plenty of opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the jewellers. The workshop will take place in The Ringsmiths studio at the iconic Oxo Tower Wharf on the River Thames.

Join us for this hands on workshop where you'll make a silver signet ring using the ancient process of cuttlebone casting.

This class is designed to provide you with the essential groundwork needed for wax carving all whilst enjoying a cocktail and in a relaxed, creative environment.

Carving wax gives you endless options to freely design whatever ring you want, as you are not limited to a silver wire or strip. This technique allows you to create something 3D, abstract, classic, chunky, geometric or organic, so you can let your imagination run wild!
The workshop begins with a short introduction to the lost wax process and its uses. The Ringsmiths team will inform you about basic tips and tricks on how to design a comfortable ring. Showing you various techniques and tools that can be used.
You will then start by designing/sketching out your ring, (samples and images will be available for inspiration) before beginning to carve your wax.
Once you’re happy with your finished carving we will show you how to complete the ring and prepare it for casting. After the class your wax carved ring will be cast, finished and polished by The Ringsmiths using recycled silver. We will contact you once it’s ready for collection or we can post it out to you. 

If you wish to have your ring gold plated or have your wax cast in solid gold then this will be at an additional cost and can be paid for and decided on the day. 

Your finished silver ring will be ready for collection or posting within 3 weeks after the class.

Extra services such as engraving, gold plating and stone setting are offered at an additional cost. These can be requested at the end of the class. Please note each of these services have a lead time of 3 weeks on top of the casting/finishing time.

I thought this workshop was amazing!! Here are some of the reasons.
1: Even as a beginner I got the opportunity to make a full piece of jewellery that I love and will enjoy wearing, which feels like quite a big milestone for a first class. I had the freedom to make my own design but was also provided with inspo.
2: It was efficiently run so that everybody could get enough one on one guidance and mentoring from the jewellers on how to make their rings. They explained the steps really clearly and helpfully.
3: Its nice atmosphere made me relaxed and able to concentrate. The experience was complete with cocktails and Halloween snacks (very instagramable)
