Kas & Ros

Hosted by award winning jewellers Milena Kovanovic (Crucible London) & Ros Millar with The Ringsmiths team.  In this direct casting method, molten metal directly fills a design carved/imprinted into the surface of a cuttlebone. Producing a finished three-dimensional cast object - in this case a signet ring. This technique is one of the earliest known casting processes used by man for thousands of years.

Over the course of this 4 hour workshop we will teach you everything you need to know about how to prepare and cast your very own silver signet ring. You will have plenty of opportunity to practice and test out this variable technique which is safe, fast and versatile.

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and more advanced students. 

Each student will be provided with an apron, though we ask you to please wear suitable non- loose clothing (as you would for any other semi-messy art form). For health and safety we also recommend close toed shoes.

With a maximum of six people in any one class, there will be plenty of opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the jewellers. The workshop will take place in a hidden, heated and covered garden, housed at the back of jewellery store ‘Kas & Ros’

We recently took part in the signet ring-making workshop to celebrate my sister-in-law’s 40th birthday, and we couldn’t have chosen a better experience! Milena, Juliette, and Annabelle were fantastic guides, patiently walking us through each step of the casting process. They gave clear instructions and allowed us to create two casts, which made the experience even more enjoyable by giving us room for trial and error. The team’s fun and relaxed energy put us at ease, and I especially loved choosing from the beautiful selection of gemstones. Join us for this hands on workshop where you'll make a silver signet ring using the ancient process of cuttlebone casting.

This class is designed to provide you with the essential groundwork needed for wax carving all whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly in a relaxed, creative environment.
Carving wax gives you endless options to freely design whatever ring you want, as you are not limited to a silver wire or strip. This technique allows you to create something 3D, abstract, classic, chunky, geometric or organic, so you can let your imagination run wild!
The workshop begins with a short introduction to the lost wax process and its uses. Ros and Milena will inform you about basic tips and tricks on how to design a comfortable ring. Showing you various techniques and tools that can be used.
You will then start by designing/sketching out your ring, (samples and images will be available for inspiration) before beginning to carve your wax.
Once you’re happy with your finished carving we will show you how to complete the ring and prepare it for casting. After the class your wax carved ring will be cast, finished and polished by Ros and Milena using recycled silver. We will contact you once it’s ready for collection or we can post it out to you.
If you wish to have your ring gold plated or have your wax cast in solid gold than this will be at an additional cost and can be paid for and decided on the day. 

Your finished silver ring will be ready for collection or posting within 2.5-3 weeks after the class.

Extra services such as engraving, gold plating and stone setting are offered at an additional cost. These can be requested at the end of the class. Please note these services have a lead time of 2-3 weeks on top of the casting/finishing time.

The Design Your Own Silver Ring workshop was simply PERFECT! Ros and Milena where great and my ring is beautiful. I was thinking about getting a new ring but couldn't really find one I liked, but then found the Ringsmiths and thought it was the perfect opportunity to learn something new and create my next ring. The workshop was beautiful, easy to get to (being right next to Blackfriars station), and Peppa the dog was always about to keep us entertained while we were busy carving (she doesn't like the postman very much by the sounds of it). The process itself was easy to do and your imagination really is the limit. Ros and Milena were really encouraging and enthusiastic about our ideas and helping bring them to life. The delight on Milena's face when I said I wanted to make a dinosaur was wonderful. (Yes, I'm the person who made the dinosaur ring if it gets mentioned in your class!) The time flew by but with regular time checks and guidance, it was plenty of time to design the ring I wanted. The turn around time once you've carved it was great too, and even with hallmarking, it was still very reasonably priced and a good turn around time with good communication about when I could come and pick it up.
I have been raving about The Ringsmiths to many of my friends, and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone. I hope to come back to do some of their other courses at some point, especially the design your own wedding rings one, I DEFINITELY want to do that... when I've found a partner of course haha.

Very fun and unique experience that I got as a gift for our wedding anniversary so that we could design the rings exactly as we wanted and personalise them. The team were lovely and very helpful and the setting is great. I do think that the workshop should be longer as we didn't have time to finish polishing/embellishing etc and it felt very rushed towards the end. Once you go the bigger size and add plating overall the rings are not cheap, but you have something completely unique and bespoke to take home and we really love how they came out!

Workshop was fine, good and detailed explanation with lots of rings to look at to help you with your design. However, it was incredibly expensive for what it was, having any minor additions or adjustments costing upwards of £30. Very disappointed with the fact that an emergency occurred that caused us to lose time and we weren’t able to have an extra time to complete it. Then when wanting a refund due to circumstances out of our control, we had to explain heavily why we wanted one and have yet to actually receive the money a month after we were granted one.
